Cleaner Tanks with Smart Data Analytics

Reliable measurement of the tank content, exact data recognition and flexible connection to the desired host systems. As a specialist for optimum tank content management Hectronic covers all these areas with fill level monitoring probes, controllers and suitable management software.

Currently, the measurement data of the OptiLevel probe HLS 6010 accruing every day are primarily evaluated with the objective of fill level gauging and represented by the Mineo Touch Controller. Within the framework of a pilot project in cooperation with the SICOS BW GmbH and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) the measurement data of a selected station were evaluated by means of a potential analysis.

System OptiLevel – Snoopers that cannot be fooled

The OptiLevel probe HLS 6010, no matter if as classic wired or as wireless variant, works on the basis of the floatless technology developed by Hectronic. With no movable parts installed in this technology the probe is not subject to wear and significantly less sensitive to contamination in the tank as the parts cannot stick together or jam. This results in a long lifetime of the fill level monitoring probes, minimum maintenance costs and a uniquely safe method for gauging.

On this basis the measurement data were collected for half a year at a selected station. The relatively long measurement period was necessary to be able to represent different weather conditions and thus create a most realistic project environment. As soon as all data were available, they were extensively evaluated by Dr.-Ing. Till Riedel and his scientific team from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). With a Smart Data Analytics evaluation as this one it is primarily not the amount of data that is relevant but their relevance with respect to the defined goals.

Successful Pilot Project in Mid-Tier Companies

Within the framework of this cooperation the objective was not only to measure the amount of fuel in the tank but also to determine the type of fuel and changes of the fuel such as mixings and contaminations. By means of different statistical methods and AI-technologies all project goals could be achieved and the findings were presented in a final presentation of the KIT-team.

“With the results of the project we can now better understand long-term interrelationships and thus further extend and improve the functional scope of the fill level sensors.” Ulrich Frey, Head of Business Unit Sensor Systems, Hectronic GmbH

The results of the successful project are not only extremely revealing for the Hectronic GmbH but may also be of interest for other small and medium-sized companies in Baden-Wurttemberg. Having performed more than 20 successful potential analyses around Smart Data Analytics in cooperation with renowned mid-tier companies the Smart Data Solution Center Baden-Wurttemberg (SDSC BW) invited to the first Smart Data & AI day in Karlsruhe on 8 October. On this occasion Ulrich Frey as Head of Business Unit Sensor Systems of Hectronic GmbH could present the successful pilot project. This practical case study was interesting for the regional network of small and medium-sized companies as they could see how and for which areas Smart Data Technologies can be successfully applied.
